Yangon (or Inle Lake) - Loikaw

Illustrated Patch 2
Soft
Adventure
DESCRIPTION

More of a pretty, frontier country town than a state capital, it's just a short, direct flight from Yangon to Loikaw. With some 9 different ethnic groups living in the area, exploring here takes us back in time to a by-gone era of colorful culture, simple living, and Animist rituals. Explore the area with your personal guide, by transport and/or soft trekking. It's picturesque, accessible, completely off-the-map and a 'Soft Adventure' thanks to comfortable sleep in town each night.

Most distinctive of the ethnic groups that call Loikaw home are the Kayan, or 'long necked' ladies who wear brass coils wrapped around their 'long necks'. In reality though, their necks are not longer, rather their shoulders have dropped from years of extending the coil. Lesser noticed are the same coils wrapped around their shins and their hair decorations of brightly colored cloth pieces. According to legend, their long necks resemble the elegance of a swan, which is a direct tie-in with their traditional Animist practices.
